Dennis E. Snyder, 71, of Peru, died following an extended illness on Friday, July 22, 2017, at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his beloved family.

Dennis was born on April 2, 1946 in Peru to Donald E. and Opal (Cattin) Snyder. He was preceded in death by his brother Earl Snyder, granddaughter Brianna, and both parents.

He is survived by sisters, Shirley Snyder, Carol (Jack) Kearney, Lynn Garrison, and Nadine (Ron) Kelley as well as daughter Alyson (John) Shoemaker, wife of 30 years TyAnna Snyder, grandsons Levi Snyder (Destiny Adams), and Calvin Conlee, and close friend John Iliff.

A 1964 graduate of Peru High School, Dennis served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1966 - 1968 and worked as an Engineer for Norfolk Southern Corporation from 1969 - 2015. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and served as a Union Representative and Legislative Representative.

Dennis had a well-known appreciation for fine craftsmanship in all its forms, and his interests were deep and varied. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed bicycling, kayaking, shooting, and rock climbing.

He loved sharing his interests with his friends and family and nurturing shared hobbies. He wasn’t just interested in photography; he built a darkroom to teach his daughter how to develop and print photos. He wasn’t just interest in flying, but used his pilot’s license to take his family to amusement parks, special dinners with distant friends, and family vacations in the mountains.

Facing the end of his life, he chose to spend his remaining time and energy re-visiting favorite people and places from Florida to Wyoming, a testament to his determination and also his devotion to his loved ones.

In Dennis’ honor, friends and family are invited to an open house at the home of Alyson and John Shoemaker at 2405 Roberts Way, Logansport,  from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017, where anyone is welcome to share memories of Dennis and raise a glass in his honor, just as he would have liked.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the National Park Service or Grand Teton National Park Foundation: https://www.nps.gov/getinvolved/donate.htm.
