Angelo Anthony 'Mike' Vitello

Angelo Anthony 'Mike' Vitello, 87, Noblesville, formerly of Logansport and Marion, passed away at 3:45 a.m., on Thursday, October 5, 2017, in St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis.

Born in Logansport on November 15, 1929, he was the son of Anthony J. and Josephine Cira Vitello.

On August 3, 1957, in Marion, Mike was married to Beverly Ann Pierce, who survives, in Noblesville.

A 1947 graduate of Logansport High School, he received his B.S. degree in Industrial Education and Technology from Purdue University in 1952, followed by an M.S. degree in the same field from Indiana State University in 1956, and a sixth-year degree in Guidance and School Administration from Ball State University in 1960.

Mike honorably served his country in the United States Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean Conflict.

From 1954 until 1967, he served the Marion Community Schools in the capacities of Dean of Men, Guidance Counselor, Industrial Coordinator, Adult Education Supervisor, Industrial Arts Teacher, and Vocational Education Teacher. During 1967, he served as Assistant Professor in the Trade/Industrial Education at Purdue University.   

Mike was the pioneer and driving force for the foundation and development of the Tucker Area Vocational Technical Center in Marion. From 1967 until 1991, he was the Director of Industrial Vocational Technical/Adult Education through the Marion Community Schools and the Principal for the Tucker Area Vocational Technical Center.

Mike had been a member of the American Association of Retired Persons; pAmerican Legion Post 368; the American Vocation Association; Elks; honorary member of Epsilon Pi fraternity; Indiana Council of Vocational Administrators;  Indiana Retired Teachers Association; Indiana Association for Adult and Continuing Education; Knights of Columbus-First, Second, Third and Fourth Degree; National Committee to Preserve Social Security; National Railway Historical Society; Purdue Alumni Association; Rotary-Past President, 1975-1976; Service Corps of Retired Executives-Chairman, 1993-1994, and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.

He had been a member of the Board of Directors for the Main Street Marion; Area 6 Community Services, Inc. where he was Chairman of the Board; Marion ReHab Project, Inc., where he had been President; and the Yorktown Properties, where he had been Secretary-Treasurer; Grant County Council on Aging; St. Paul Bennett School; Marion Rotary Club; Opportunities Industries; Madison/Grant Private Industry Council, O.I.C.; and the Chairman of the North Central Association Evaluation.

He had been Trustee, Emeritus and on the Board of Directors for Gibault School for Boys.

In 1982, he received the Distinguished Service Award from Adult Education Association of Indiana, and in 1984, he received the Merit Award from the Adult Education Association of Indiana.

Mike also enjoyed his yearly spring vacations with his family to Destin, FL, and the West Coast. He was an avid baseball lover and cheered exclusively for the New York Yankees. He also enjoyed playing golf with his friends and family.

Also surviving are children, Michael A. (Lisa) Vitello, Sacramento, James A. Vitello, Noblesville, Annette M. Vitello, Medford, Oregon, and Michelle Vitello Stanley, Westfield; grandchildren, Nicholas Anthony Vitello, Brendan Joseph Kennedy, Alexandria Nicole Titus, Andrea Rene Vitello, Natalie Rose Earle, Madeline Renee Stanley, Andrew Joseph Kennedy, and Anthony Joseph Vitello; four great grandchildren; and sister, Angeline R. Schroeder, Greenwood.

The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Marion, with Father Richard Weisenberger officiating.

Visitation will be at the church, also on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Interment, with full military honors, will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport.
