Rovena G. Ayers, age 78, Walton, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017, in Kindred Specialty Hospital, Indianapolis, after a long and courageous battle with pneumonia.

Born Friday, June 23, 1939, in Campbellsburg, Washington County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Joseph and Pearl Browning Lucas.

On June 14, 1959, in Campbellsburg, she was marred to John “Jack” Ayers, who preceded her on October 18, 2017, just two and a half weeks ago.

Rovena retired in 2002 as an elementary teacher in the Southeastern School Corporation.

She was a 1957 graduate of Campbellsburg High School and earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Indiana University, Kokomo.

Among her many activities were memberships in both Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, where she had been president and secretary, and Retired Teachers Association. She served as president of the Walton Main Street Association and secretary of the Walton Library Board. For ten years she was a 4-H Association leader.

Rovena was a member of the Walton United Methodist Church, where she served in several offices over the years and was also church pianist.

Rovena was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by sons Michael S. (Terri) of Logansport, Brian P. (Lisa) of Walton, and Kelly K. (Kelly) of Logansport; daughter Janalee S. (Bill) Kovacs of Whiteland; 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, several foster grandchildren and several cousins.

She also leaves behind her beloved colleagues, Elizabeth Billman, Donna Downham, Anita Blackman, Penny Schaefer, and many others; also “adopted family” Ann and Robert Moore and family, Tom and Marsha Riggs, Ken Berry and Denise Morgan. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Penny S. Lucas and infant Mary Jo Lucas.

Services for Rovena Ayers will be held at Kroeger Funeral Home in Logansport. Friends and family may gather to celebrate Rovena’s life on Tuesday, November 7, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Carolyn DeWitt officiating. Burial will be in Walton I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewis Cass Scholarship Fund in care of the Cass County Community Foundation or Walton United Methodist Church.
