Thomas J. 'T.J.' Smith Obituary

Thomas (T.J.) Smith 81, former owner of T.J. Smith Photography, died on Saturday, August 8, 2020.

Born in Logansport, June 9, 1939, he was the son of the late Lowell J. Smith and the late Nora L. Boyer.

He was a man of many interests, especially remembered for his creativity, singing voice, endearing personality and love of life.

On July 15, 1966, he married Ann L. Castaldi.

Surviving are his wife, Ann, Logansport; sons, Scott and Joseph Smith; daughter, Kim Smith;  and grandson, Trever Smith, all of Vancouver, WA; sister, Linda Smith of Colorado Springs; brothers, Gary (Judy) Gilsinger, and Jim Conn all of Logansport.

Following graduation from Logansport High School in 1958, he entered the U.S. Navy and was assigned as electronics specialist, as well as, an invited  member of the Navy Blue Jackets Chorus.

He was a member of the Professional Photographers of America, American Legion, National Rifle Association, Elks, and Wm. Paca Lodge.

Upon completion of military service, Tom returned to Logansport and was employed by Essex' RBM Division. This was followed by a series of promotions as regional sales representative assigned to cover the US territories in Ohio, Georgia, and Kansas. He later became western regional manager with Bose Corp., all of which led to a position with Friedman’s Microwave Oven Appliances in Oakland, CA. Ultimately, he and Ann became the owner of six Friedman’s Microwave Oven franchise retail stores in California's Silicon Valley area. Through their businesses, they enjoyed traveling abroad, and visited many countries.

After retiring, he and Ann returned to Logansport in 1990, and in 1995, opened T.J. Smith Photography, taking advantage of the couples’ business experience and Tom’s remarkable talent as a photographer.

He served twelve years as a member of the Logansport Municipal Utility Service Board and had been an active volunteer for other community organizations.  During winter months, Tom and Ann enjoyed time in Sebring, FL, where he was active in real estate sales.

Tom was a member of All Saints Catholic parish.

The family would like to thank Guardian Angels Hospice and staff for their care and concern.

Honoring his wishes, there will be no public service.

Burial will be in Logansport at Mount Hope Cemetery.
