William H. Whitehead Obituary

William H. Whitehead, age 88, Logansport, passed away at 7:33 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019, in WoodBridge Health Campus.

Born in Logansport on February 13, 1931, he was the son of William B. and Kathleen I. O’Morrow Whitehead.

Mr, Whitehead was a graduate of St. Vincent Elementary School, Logansport High School Class of 1949 where he was on the baseball team, and a graduate and supporter of Tri-State University (Trine), receiving a degree in civil engineering.

He was a four-year veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict, traveling and servicing the remote communication systems along the Alaskan D.E.W. (Distant Early Warning ‘radar’) Line.

Mr. Whitehead was a thirty-three-year employee of the Illinois Dept. of Transportation, District One, of the Chicagoland area.  He was a field construction engineer directly involved on many interstate projects, and a 30-year resident of Joliet.

Retiring in 1992, Mr. Whitehead enjoyed motoring the Northwest and Southwest Territories visiting many national parks and historic locations of Western Lore.  He most enjoyed tracing the Lewis and Clark Trail.  In 1993, he drove a forty-day round trip to Alaska, including Denali Park, a tour of Prudhoe Bay, and a flight-see around Mt. McKinley.

He was a member and contributor to All Saints Catholic Parish, Trine University, the Air Force Association, Lewis and Clark Foundation, several national parks, the National Wildlife and other entities.

He was a sports enthusiast of the Cubs, Bears, Colts, Notre Dame, Indiana and Purdue Universities, and the Logan Berries.

Survivors include brother, Robert J. and Mary Ellen Leffert Whitehead, Sacramento; nephews, Mark (Wendy) Whitehead, Valley Spring, Calif., and Kevin Whitehead, Chula Vista, Calif; great niece, Dana Whitehead; great nephew Michael (Linda) Whitehead; cousin, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cahalan, Logansport; and many 2nd and 3rd cousins.

Preceding in death was cousin, Mary Margaret Mee.

Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:45 a.m., on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Kroeger Funeral Home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow, on Friday, at 11:00 a.m., at All Saints Catholic Church, with Fr. Jeff Martin officiating.

Burial with full military honors provided by the Cass County Honor Guard and uniformed active-duty members of the United States Air Force, will follow in the Mt. Calvary section of Mt. Hope Cemetery.
