John Herron, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 17, 2018 at Logansport Memorial Hospital. John was born on July 9, 1932 in Ardara, County Donegal, Ireland to parents Joseph (“Wee Joe”) and Mary (Sweeney) Herron. John was the oldest of seven siblings.
John was a fiercely independent man who had a love of travel and adventure. John left Ireland at age 18 to enlist in the British Merchant Navy, stationed in London. John had many trips around the world but his most treasured memories were the times he spent in South American ports.
John joined family in the United States in 1959, settling in the Philadelphia area. John had a long professional career as an insurance adjuster, operating Herron Adjustment for twenty years, retiring in 2002. Shortly after retirement, John moved to Indiana to be closer to his daughter and grandsons.
John was a man of many interests. He was self-educated and a wealth of information on investing, economics, art, and gardening. Additionally, John had a keen interest in history and politics and was a voracious consumer of news. Among his favorites were the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.
John is survived by his daughter, Amy Miller, who he affectionately referred to as “Number 1,” her husband, Andrew, and grandsons, Noah, Samuel and John (“Jack”).
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Vincent, and sister, Mary.
He is survived by his siblings, Noel (Joan) Herron, Vancouver, Canada, Anne Herron, St. Louis, Missouri, Malachy (Julia) Herron, Birmingham, England and Dermot Herron, Ardara, Ireland.
In spite of his deteriorating health, John had an unshakeable confidence in his ability to live independently. With the support of his caregiver, Jeannie, John was able to live in the home he loved until the end. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his caregivers, Jeannie, Jessica and Kathy, as well as Dr. Cheri Bennett and the staff at Logansport Memorial Hospital and Angels of Mercy Homecare, for the wonderful care John received.
Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Kroeger Funeral Home, with the funeral service following at 5:30 p.m., also at the funeral home. Fr. Jeff Martin will officiate. Interment will be in Walton I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
