Robert "Alan" Hildebrandt Obituary

Robert “Alan” Hildebrandt, age 100, Logansport, entered Heaven May 16, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born February 28, 1923, in Logansport, his parents were Hiram and Helen (Lux) Hildebrandt of Logansport Indiana.

He follows and believes in Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He was a life-long member of Calvary Presbyterian Church where he worshipped as a young boy until now.

Alan graduated from Purdue University’s School of Civil Engineering after serving in World War II as a Captain in the U.S Army Air Corps. He completed 64 combat missions over Italy and Germany at the controls of a Martin B-26 medium-light bomber from May of 1944 through May of 1945.

He fell in love with and married Edith “Edie” (Scagnoli) Hildebrandt February 2, 1948 who survives. She was the light of his life for more than 75 years.

After serving in the military and graduating from college, Alan worked as an accountant at the Golden Rule Department Store in downtown Logansport with the owner and his best friend, Herman Schmidt.

In 1954 Alan joined his older brother John Hildebrandt as partner in the management of the John J. Hildebrandt Fishing Tackle Company started by their grandfather “Big John” Hildebrandt in the 1890’s. High quality, hand produced, sport fishing spinners and lures were made in Logansport and shipped to wholesale distributors across the United States, Canada, and abroad, including loyal customers in Japan.

Alan retired in 2006 when the business was sold. Brother John and Alan enjoyed a long, business partnership with John managing design and production of fishing products and Alan managing accounting and marketing of what was produced.

More important than the family business to Alan was his family. “Uncle Al” was welcomed into the Scagnoli family after marrying Edie, and became brother-in-law to the husbands and wives of the six brothers and five sisters Edie had, as well as uncle to the many nieces and nephews from those brothers and sisters. Alan also enjoyed his time with his older brother John’s family, and younger brother Hiram Jr.’s family. Wife Edie, daughter Ann, and son Mark, his grandchildren and great grand-daughter, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews were his greatest treasures and priority. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and his church family.

He is survived by wife Edie (Scagnoli) Hildebrandt, son Mark (Barbara) Hildebrandt, grandchildren Timothy “TJ” (Elaine) Carson, Liz Carson (Zach), Katie (Jeremy) Collins, Dr. Megan (Connor) Adams, Andrew Hildebrandt (Kaylee) and great grand-daughter Jordyn Collins. Alan was preceded in death by his daughter Ann, his parents, brothers John and Hiram “Hi” Jr., and many friends he made throughout his long life.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 20th, at Kroeger Funeral Home.

The funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, also at Kroeger Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Dan Lute officiating.

Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by uniformed members of the United States Army and the local Cass County Military Honor Guard.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date.

Alan was a loyal prayer warrior. If you ever met or knew him, it is very likely he prayed for you. It is also quite likely he will continue to intercede on your behalf from his new home in heaven.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Logansport Public Library or Guardian Angel Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
